My Haircut Decision Brief
This brief captures what I am drawn to, my everyday routine, and the tradeoffs I want to discuss. I would like your advice on what is realistic for my hair and how to adapt this direction.
My preferred direction
Soft layers with visible movement around the face — closer to medium length, not above the collarbone. I want it to feel lighter without losing the ability to wear it up.
What I like across my references
- Soft face framing that moves rather than sits stiff
- Visible texture without looking messy
- Length that grazes the collarbone
- Layers that add movement but keep some weight at the ends
What I want to avoid
- Short layers that require heat to look intentional
- Losing the ability to wear it in a ponytail or bun
- Thin, wispy ends that don't hold shape when air-dried
My hair and routine
Air-dries with loose waves and some frizz. Usually 10–15 minutes to style. Wear it up several times a week. Prefer trims every 3+ months.
Tradeoffs to discuss
Styling effort — medium. The face-framing movement in several of your references may depend on blow-drying or a round brush. Worth discussing which layer placement will work with your natural wave pattern when air-dried.
Grow-out — low concern. Longer, blended layers typically grow out more gracefully than shorter disconnected ones. Ask your stylist how to frame the cut so it stays wearable between trims.
Questions for my stylist
- Which version of this direction is realistic for my natural texture and routine?
- Which parts of these references depend most on styling?
- How would this grow out if I only style lightly?
- What would you change to make it easier to wear up?
